I've never really questioned where my fondness for brunch comes from, but I am now certain I know my answer. It's my grandparents. With a rivaling passion to my own weekend planning, my grandparents were determines to bring my sister and me to one of their favorite brunch spot in Annapolis: Miss Shirley's Cafe.

We walked the block (in a light rain) to Miss Shirley's and were greeted by a bunch of open tables. Apparently it gets rather busy, so we went around 8:00 AM. My first impression was that the host was friendly, the decorations were orange and the place was large.

When I was in high school, I was a nerd (wait, still am) who liked science. If science didn't involve math, I probably would have pursued something in that field in college.

One of my favorite lessons was about the second law of thermodynamics. Yes, it's weird that out of all the science we learned, this one stuck out to me and still mulls around in my brain these days. Basically, the law states that everything eventually turns to shit. In technical terms, you'd say entropy, but basically it's the law of nature that everything is going to digress into a mess.

I won $100 at work, but they couldn't hand me cash for tax purposes, so I got a $50 gift card to H&M and a $50 to Target. That way, I would force myself into buying clothes, but I could also be practical at Target. I legitimately laid in bed one day on the Target website and brainstormed what I'd like to buy. I decided on tampons, a hamper and mouthwash. Let's just breeze over the fact that it took me hours of thinking to decide on those three items and move on to an even bigger problem.

I had $50 to H&M. That gift card was almost guaranteed to spend itself. Until it didn't. I picked out a bright pink top (trying to expand my colors in my wardrobe), a flowy summer top (it was on sale for $2) and a blue sweater that sat like a tent on my body but had tigers on it (because it had tigers on it, duh). It cost me $25 total.

Food Review: River City Food Tours

Last weekend, Cazey and I had the pleasure of being tourists in our own city. We were invited to try the Carytown Food and History Tour, hosted by River City Food Tours. Our booking was last Saturday at 2PM on a perfect autumn afternoon, until the sun went down and it got a little chilly. The email reminder told us to bring a positive attitude, water, walking shoes, and to dress appropriately. Apparently we’re not good at following directions because we neglected to bring water and wear enough clothing once the sun went down a bit.

My first pro tip would be to follow the professional advice and bring water and a jacket. The water is crucial, as you’ll taste a lot of food and not every restaurant provides water.

There is nothing that bothers me more than loud chewers. You know those people who clang their forks against their teeth. And slurp on the food as it goes down their throat. Those people with their gaping, open mouths as they inhale and chew food. And chew loud enough that you can hear from another room. Those people that make you wonder if they grew up in barn raised by wolves – wolves who probably have tamer eating habits than they do.

It enrages me. It actually makes me question never speaking to the person again. I can feel the heat building in my heart, causing my blood to boil. Sometimes I lash out, sometimes I leave the room, and all the time it makes me want to dry heave into the toilet. I’ve sometimes thought it’s irrational, but if a person can’t tamely ingest some food, what kind of person are they really?

How to Get Over Gum Replacement Surgery

I recently had to get a chunk taken out of the roof of my mouth and sewn to the bottom left of my gums. It's not the first time I've had to get this done either. But hopefully it will be the last.

My gum recession is the result of a mixture of issues, including genetics, a lot of orthodontia and maybe some vigorous brushing. I've had to get two gum replacements so far, and should anything change, they've already identified a few spots that are thinner than the rest.

I did not submit any of my throwbacks for a variety of reasons. The most major reason being that I looked ridiculous both years for prom, and yet here I am sending them out into the inter-webs in the name of a blog post.

The Telling Windows of Amsterdam
