Why I Think You May Like Me (Even Though You Have a Boyfriend)
This post was orginially posted on the now disbanded Real Talk Mag.
Because three years ago, in a circle of strangers, we named each other as our respective crushes.
Because one night later you came home with me because you said you left your keys in my apartment. And I stupidly offered to pay for your cab.
Because you called me the next day and asked to get lunch before you left town.
Because a month later you invited me to drive to your hometown that afternoon, like, right now, because you had off work until Monday.
Because you wanted me to go out with you the moment we were back together at school.
Because you texted me at 5:30 am and asked to get breakfast the day you broke up with your boyfriend.
Because we talked about me driving out west with you for your new job.
Because a year ago I texted you while at "our bar" and you responded.
Because your best friend said you broke up with your new boyfriend that same day. (Temporarily.)
Because I kept you in mind for two years.
Because I wrote about us in only a way we would know and your boyfriend knew.
Because you said you read what I write.
Because you say you think about me often.
Because you disappeared as soon as I arrived and everyone said you were on the phone with your boyfriend.
Because when I asked the room whether I could have the gum on the table, you answered without looking at me.
Because when someone asked who you were on the phone with, you answered, "My soon-to-be ex-boyfriend."
Because you live with your boyfriend and you can't break up with him.
Because our arms snaked around each other thirty seconds later.
Because I want you to.
Because you don't answer my texts when I ask what you have been up to.
Because you told me you wanted to text me last week about a funny story, but your phone was dead.
Because you know I think about you.
Because you said my arms look good, and when I laughed, you said, "Really, you look good."
Because when I saw you last week, you said, "I'm sure I'll be back."
