Brunch Review: MiKro Craft Beer Bar and Bistro
This past weekend I went to MiKro, a craft beer bar and bistro located in Hamden, Connecticut. MiKro consists of an average-sized bar with just a handful of tables. Initially when I walked into Mikro, first through a door, then through a curtain, I realized it was quite dark, which I was not expecting for a Sunday morning. However, once my eyes adjusted, I noticed it had a somewhat rustic and cozy atmosphere.
Every Sunday from 11:30 AM to 2 PM they have a special brunch menu. Items on theis brunch menu include: French toast, hash, croque madame, chilaquiles, MiKro benedict, shrimp and grits, sausage biscuits, kale chop salad, and a MiKro burger. However, their menu varies from week to week.
MiKro is clearly a craft beer bar first and foremost, with somewhere near 20 craft beer taps and enough alcohol choices to satisfy even the most particular drinkers. Their beer lists constantly changes and gets updated with the latest craft brews. It was a limited brunch menu, but that is to be expected seeing as it is more geared toward lunch and dinner. Their weekday menu is much larger with many appetizers, entrees, sandwiches and flatbreads.
For my meal I ordered the sausage biscuits, which consisted of buttermilk biscuits, white sausage gravy, poached eggs, smoked brats, and fried fingerling potatoes. The dish is nothing new for me as I've had all of these things before, but I decided to get it anyway. I wanted to try a northern take on a southern favorite of mine. The sausages were average, but the biscuits and gravy were some of the best I’ve had in a while. Everything worked well together on this dish. The sweet and fluffy biscuits made for a less greasy and salty meal.
They also have a few specialty drinks on the brunch menu including a pomegranate lemonade and a beer-mosa. The one I chose, though, was the bacon bloody mary because, well…bacon! The bacon bloody mary comes with Bakon vodka and a piece of bacon as a garnish. I’m a firm believer that you can’t go wrong adding bacon to anything, and in this case I was correct.
My girlfriend ordered the hash, which consisted of pork belly, chorizo, fingerling potatoes, piquillo peppers, caramelized onions, a poached egg, and a dijon crema. She said she enjoyed it; however, the dijon sauce was a bit too strong. I agree with her because when I tried it, the sauce was overpowering when you took too much of it in one bite. With less sauce, or even none, she thought the dish would have been better.
One of the problems I could see is that MiKro is just that: micro. There are only a handful of tables, and luckily we got there early and got a table, but it filled up swiftly after we sat down. Their speedy service counters that, though.
Overall, I’m a fan of MiKro. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, and I am planning on going back again for Sunday brunch. We both left full and satisfied. I would also like to see what their regular menu has to offer, like their cheese and beer pairings. MiKro is also very easy to find, being on Route 10 in Hamden. If you live in the area, or are ever passing through, I recommend stopping by because you can’t go wrong with brunch and beer.
