As Told Over Brunch

Brunch Review: Galaxy Diner

I discovered Galaxy Diner many years in a galaxy just a short distance away ago aka the first month I moved to Richmond. My roommate at the time took me and a couple of her friends after a VMFA happy hour. And I'll be honest, I've never been to Galaxy for anything but dinner. But it's breakfast food all day, so you could feasibly brunch here. And breakfast for dinner is second best to brunch. Actually, maybe better because you can breakfast for dinner on weekdays, too.

Anyway, I feel compelled to write a review for Galaxy and let those that don't know about this galaxy that's much closer than a galaxy far, far away. Galaxy is situated about halfway through Carytown, between Greek on Cary and Carytown Cupcakes. It has sliding glass doors, but you have to press the button for them to slide open, which is genius, or else they'd be sliding open every second for every Carytown passerby.

The place is decorated like a throwback diner (imagine that), complete with vintage film posters that feature aliens. I'm actually not sure if the posters are for real alien flicks or not.

The menu is extensive. You have to decide if you want breakfast, sandwiches, dinner, dessert, fried foods, etc. (I actually don't know what the etcetera encapsulates; I think I covered it all.) At least there's something for everyone. I'm a brunchie so I am always on that breakfast menu, but a lot of my friends like sandwiches, which is something I don't understand, but their sandwiches are good if you're into that sort of thing.

Highlights for me off the breakfast menu are the black hole pancakes (aka Oreo-stuffed), the huevos rancheros, and the space debris omelet. As of late, I've been stuck on the omelet. I've never actually ordered the Oreo pancakes myself because I tend to strive toward having abs, but when I eat it off of someone else's plates, the calories don't count. Right?

As for the huevos rancheros, there is no meat. It has a black bean patty, so I will warn you, it can have a very bean-y taste. But the omelet - oh em gee. It is just so good. And so much food. It comes with tots or hash browns (hash browns all the way, baby!), stewed tomatoes or apples (do the apples - they're like dessert!), a biscuit or toast (complete with a plate full of individually-packaged butter pats and jelly!), and ... well, isn't that enough? The omelet itself consists of three eggs (I've yet to meet a restaurant omelet that isn't three eggs) and black beans, onion, tomatoes, jalapenos, spinach, cheddar, and is topped with avocado.

Just don't order their soup, because one time my friends and I were celebrating a friend's 21st, and I ordered soup and a Long Island iced tea because I was a not hungry cheapskate who regretted all those decisions hours later. Oh yeah, Galaxy serves alcohol. This is a bar/diner. Out of this world, right?

So check out Galaxy Diner if you haven't already. You'll probably run into me one of these days.
