As Told Over Hot Chick Brunch
My parents came down to Richmond and wanted either nachos or chicken for dinner, so I narrowed down our options to Billy Jack’s, Hot Chick, Continental Westhampton or Weezies. We ended up going to Continental Westhampton, but I couldn’t get over the menu and the gut feeling I had that Hot Chick would be a place for me.
The next day, my boyfriend texted me and told me we should brunch at Hot Chick — which is why we’re together clearly — and we made plans for the next weekend. I read and reread the menu at least once a day until it was finally Sunday.
I knew things were going to be rough. It went from three of us to eight of us pretty quickly, and the Eat RP restaurants don’t take reservations (or at least I don’t think they do, I might need to be fact checked). Our friend made it there before we did, and we got put on the list for 1.5 hours.
I have a condition called GETTING REALLY HANGRY so I informed everyone we were going to my favorite brunch spot, On The Rox. I walked in confidently and sat us in the front circle booth and informed the table that we were getting brisket bites because they’re the best thing on the menu / questionably the best brunch dish every created (not to oversell it). We also ordered some fresh coffee and the breakfast fries.
But this isn’t a brunch review about On the Rox. We finished and paid there and then our time was up and we wandered back over to Hot Chick.
Hot Chick Brunch Review
The interior is tight and narrow (that’s what she said) with brightly color-blocked wood panels. If you look closely, you’ll find egg baskets surrounding the lights. To start, I got the RVA latte, which was Belle Isle Coffee Moonshine, Kahlua, vodka and vanilla. It came in a fancy martini glass which made me feel like a pretentious asshole in a chicken joint, but it was pretty good!
Since I was a a hot chicken sandwich place, I wanted hot chicken. I was surprised to find they didn’t have a hot chicken biscuit on the menu, but fear not, I created my own. I asked to remove the mustard from the chicken biscuit and replace it with the hot chicken.
My boyfriend knew days in advance he was going to get banana pudding waffles, or as he says, ‘nana puddin’. Around the table, someone ordered a chicken omelet, a chicken biscuit (same modification as mine), mac and cheese (from the regular menu, which is always available) and the breakfast bowl.
While the wait was long for our table (because the place is v new and popular), the wait for food is not. Very quickly or food was delivered on shiny silver plates.
Hot Chicken Biscuit
The chicken biscuit featured a flavorful biscuit with fried cheese, two hot chicken tenders and spicy honey. I cut the sandwich in half to split with my boyfriend and took a bite. I loved the biscuit a whole lot. I liked the chicken too, but wished it was much hotter.
Banana Pudding Waffles
Once we both finished our half of biscuit, we moved onto the waffle. Considering I was excited FOR DAYS about the chicken sandwich, it feels weird to say this, but I couldn’t get enough of the banana pudding waffle. The waffle was delicate yet sturdy. They were so generous with the cream too. It was really sweet though, which is why I am thankful my boyfriend and I split both a sandwich and waffle.
Overall, I am pretty excited about going back once the hype dies down. I read Google Reviews that you can ask for them to make the chicken hotter, which is what I’ll definitely be doing.
