As Told Over Brunch

Here's Why You Need to Embrace the Mess

When I was in high school, I was a nerd (wait, still am) who liked science. If science didn't involve math, I probably would have pursued something in that field in college.

One of my favorite lessons was about the second law of thermodynamics. Yes, it's weird that out of all the science we learned, this one stuck out to me and still mulls around in my brain these days. Basically, the law states that everything eventually turns to shit. In technical terms, you'd say entropy, but basically it's the law of nature that everything is going to digress into a mess.

Knowing myself a bit better these days, hindsight has made it painfully evident why I liked this law so much back in the day. If everything eventually is going to turn into a steaming pile of shit, why bother fighting it? You may think I'm sounding horribly pessimistic, but I really actually mean it in a positive way.

If everything is going to fall apart eventually, it's a waste of energy trying to fight against it.

Will your perfect curls get droopy? Yes, now continue dancing. Will my car start smoking on the side of the road and die a horrible death eventually? Absolutely, he's done it once before, so now I can just be prepared for when he doesn't make it back next time. Will my bed get messy again? Duh, in like 15 hours, so why bother making it?

When you realize that there is a literal rule dooming all your planning and preparation, it is insanely liberating.

There's no point in stressing about maintaining a high level of organization, because that's not natural. It's just not going to happen.

The point of life isn't to bring order to the mess that is life, but to create enough of a path that you can navigate the mess. Once you realize that the universe is fighting against all your organization and planning, it's a lot easier to let the small stuff slide. Sure, you might get your new shoes all wet and the suede will never look the same, but that was going to happen eventually anyway. Mine as well not fight the inevitable. You are now free to worry about other things than reorganizing your spice rack.

Embrace the mess, it's only natural.
