The Unfinished Painting, or My Grandma’s Optimism

My grandmother never had spectacular health. Since I was a kid, she hobbled around on either a cane or walker before she graduated eventually to a wheelchair in which, at family dinners, I rolled my cousins around the house while my grandma swatted at us with her picker-upper stick and shouted, “That’s not a toy!” What was even less of a toy was her electric scooter, and it was also much more fun.

In the last couple of years, my grandma became bedridden. I do not think she would have used that word. My grandma was an optimist. “Bedridden” may imply some failing or inevitability. My grandma did not have that outlook.

Painting with Ketchup

Paint Nites, if you don’t know, are events held at local restaurants and bars where a painter walks you through replicating some painting to the best of your ability while you sip on a cocktail. You sign up based on which painting you want to replicate. I recommend enrolling via Groupon vs. the actual Paint Nite site ($25 vs. $45, respectively).

I went to art school for a whole year in fifth grade. I don’t paint on any regular basis, but I do have creative bones in my body. There’s this one 3-D painting I created three years ago that I used to hang over my fireplace in my apartment until my mom visited and asked why I had it on display.

I recently moved into my own condo and with Pinterest-fueled inspiration decided to paint my bedroom. All was going smoothly until it was time to take out the blinds to finish painting around the windows. Fed up, I decided that could wait for another day.

After about a month in the new place it was past time to do battle with the blinds. A very helpful YouTube video and one black-and-blue fingernail later, all of the blinds were gone and I was ready to finish painting. The last remaining hiccup was my puppy. Paint and puppies don’t mix.

My puppy, Walker, is very good about his crate, though there is zero chance he will stay quiet if he knows that there is someone else in the apartment. With that as option one, and him scratching the closed bedroom door as option number two, I decided that I had to trick Walker into thinking he was the only one at home.

Craft Beer > Craft Time

During my week off around the holidays, I did little more than hang out with my family and sample my dad's favorite beer. Then my sister offered to let/help me paint some signs. We'll google our favorite quotes and then paint them on these little wooden planks so we can hang them up for all to see. Sounds like fun, right?

Absolutely not.

Making crafts is excessively difficult and stressful for people that are not crafty. When my sister saw the planks, she had visions of what colors would look good, how we could stencil things on them and which background paper we could modge podge onto it (yeah -- not sure that's even what it's called, I just went along with it). When I saw the wood, I was wondering why we didn't just buy the pre-made signs I saw at Marshalls. But in the sake of Christmas spirit, I tried anyways so I could give one to my Secret Santa recipient. Here's a recap of how the experience went:
